Since February 2024, ArcheoServizi has been undertaking archaeological monitoring and investigation for the Province of Benevento’s project to complete the road connecting the Caudine Valley with the SS7 Appia.

The ongoing stratigraphic investigations are expanding our knowledge of the historical and urban development of ancient Saticula between the Samnite and Roman periods. Discoveries include a section of the Samnite fortification wall, subsequently covered by Roman burials, and at least two dwellings.

The findings are also relevant to the process of Roman expansion in the area. Research and documentation continue in the field, while the finds are being analysed by the specialists involved.

01

The Samnite fortification wall

A section of the Samnite fortification wall was identified, subsequently covered by Roman burials. It bears witness to the profound changes the site underwent over the centuries.

02

Dwellings

Excavation identified at least two dwellings, with continued occupation between the fourth and third centuries BC. The study of structures and finds provides information about everyday life and the organisation of domestic space.

03

Saticula and Roman expansion

The evidence helps reconstruct the historical context preceding and accompanying the consolidation of Roman control over the area, providing new insights into the political, social and cultural changes of ancient Saticula.
