In September 2023, archaeological work was undertaken during the removal of existing paving, under the scientific direction of the heritage authority. The work formed part of the City of Benevento’s PICS project ARCO TRAIANO: EMOZIONARE E VALORIZZARE, aimed at regenerating and enhancing the area around the Arch of Trajan.

The project will lead to the construction of a display structure at the edge of the Arch of Trajan area, housing a lapidarium with sculpture and architectural elements.

The masonry structures and associated archaeological finds suggest that the skeletal remains may have been transferred from an early medieval burial ground associated with religious buildings near Porta Aurea, and deposited during the modern or contemporary period in a space used as a communal burial pit.
