Between March and July 2024, ArcheoServizi carried out an archaeological excavation in Montesarchio, in an area under direct archaeological protection due to the presence of the necropolis of ancient Caudium, one of the main centres of the Samnite Caudini.
The investigations revealed and documented three funerary contexts from the Orientalising period, dating between the second half of the eighth century and the end of the seventh century BC and associated with the so-called Pit Grave Culture of ancient Campania.
Caudium’s position on the routes linking the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic sides of Italy encouraged economic and cultural exchange from the eighth century BC. Preliminary analysis of the finds confirms contact with contemporary communities elsewhere in Campania.
